Thanks very much. Replacing the start*.elf and fixup*.dat files in the boot partition of the SD card with new ones from the stable link makes my old SD card work on new 3B+ boards.I had to do this recently when we bought more RasPi3B+ for production.
The newer 3B+ needs firmware from the newer distros. The document at the following link has instructions for manually modifying the older OS image with the new firmware.

So: there is some sort of difference between the older and newer 3B+ boards. But it can be handled by changing the SD card contents in a kind of surgical way -- that is, there does not seem to be a need to do full blown updates if you "like" the SD card image you have.
I really appreciate all your help. I had seen the essential pdf that is linked to but I had not read it carefully enough!
