Troubleshooting • No network connection after OS upgrade

Rpi model 2B with Ralink RT5370 Wireless Adapter dongle.

Ran happily for years with WiFi (Wlan0) connection with Raspbian "Stretch" OS. Never used eth0 (ethernet) connection.

I upgraded to "Buster" using command line and all during this upgrade the wifi connection worked just fine. For a few hours it continued to work and then mysteriously just quit. During boot up the rolling display has a FAILED line about dhpcd server. The network icon at upper right in the desktop shows "DHCP server connection lost".

I searched for hours and tried many suggested things in the wpa_supplicants.conf and /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/dhcpcd.conf files. Nothing fixed it.

I finally plugged an ethernet cable in, thinking that's got to work. But it didn't. I've tried many suggestions in the above config files trying for static or dhcp'ed connections with no joy.

Keyboad and HDMI interface are still working but with no network connection it's worthless. I'm pretty much resigned to starting over with pi imager and rpi OS (Bookworm). Unfortunately unless I can get a network connection, I will not be able to save some python files and shell scripts by fileziall'ing them to my PC. (Yep, should have done that long ago.)

If anyone can help me get either wlan0 or eth0 connected, it would be appreciated!
