The Pimoroni base is the one I was looking at the most, unfortunately for Raspberry Pi because while 2230 and 2242 NVME drives must be common in the UK they are not common at all here basically making the official M2 hat a non stater for me, and unfortunately for myself because the Pimoroni board isn't available here at a good price so I'll probably have to import it.
I've certainly got some good feedback. I probably don't need to rush into getting NVME, maybe try it on the "desktop replacement" first and see how it fares.

It's good that you mention this. I was very careful with compatibility with the Sata ->USB adapter and SSD drive when I got my Pi 4's (thanks to jamesachambers.com for all the testing he and his readers did). Unfortunately he doesn't have the same testing data for NVME and M2 hats. Not sure if the compatibility issue with combinations of NVMe SSD models and the various PCIe HAT/BASE is better or worse than with USB/SATA adaptors and SSDs. I suspect it is easier to find a stable combination, but I purchased a kit from Pimoroni with a NVMe SSD they tested/certified.
