Purchasing a USB-microSD card adaptor and a spare microSD card would likely be a fabulous investment. Both are useful for many things and this would allow you to clone the microSD, before you engage in potential excesses of enthusiasm. It is a super easy solution for less than $20.

Use SD Copier to make a clone of your install. Experiment away. If you horribly break things, shut down, swap in the copy you just made, and carry on.

As breakage gets less frequent, you can go longer between making the backup copy.
Yes backups are a nice feature. I do use them on my "production" systems. But to be a bit philosophical, sometimes you really need to see how far you can actually go before the system is totally unusable. In that case you can always revert to the last point when it worked. But that also means you have to document your way to know which copy to revert to. And documentation is not really my strong side.
