Even better might be to access the API of whatever calendar and scheduling suite that you use in the office so it only needs to be updated in on place and gets auto-updated. Our calendar / work status is displayed online via Outlook/Exchange/Teams and it is all cloud based.
The use of sockets to get messages back and forth between the clients and server seems to be no issue. The challenge will be to make a user friendly GUI for the end user, by connecting to some sort of a web potal and choose between "Home sick", "Vacation", "Out of office", "Business travel" and that kind of stuff, and get that info relayed via the Raspberry PI server unit to the office display of each of the employees.
Our offices has guest Wifi provided by Cisco Meraki devices, these have their own dedicated internet line and are isolated from the main network.
Our cloud based stuff is accessible from outside, using MFA.
