I'd also suggest keeping OS and critical data on separate physical devices. Sure, it's a little extra config but it makes life much easier when you need to fix a badly broken OS or want to upgrade between major OS releases.
Of course, you'd then need to backup OS and data devices separately.
Oh, and don't be tempted by RAID1 (or 10 or 5 or 6). RAID is not a substitue for backups. It protects against drive failure and maintains availability but does not protect against other forms of data loss (such as accidentally deleting the wrong file).
