Why would the number of lanes affect how much current it takes to erase a block of flash and write it with new data? What's the rating on your SSD's? Most likely 3.3V, but how many A?
The Kingston NVMe SSD is 3.3v @ 4.5W (maximum on writes). That would be 1.36A if all 4 data lanes were used or 0.34A for the 1 data lane used on a Raspberry Pi 5.
I don't know the Buffalo USB3 SSD power consumption, but it's plugged into a powered USB3 hub.
Even so, It seems possible the power needed to flash the SSD may cause the Ethernet to miss some packets at which point the retransmissions result in a slow write speed.
