Judging by that, particluarly the ls output on you home directory, there is no directory named for your HDD (or rather it's single partition) in pi's home directory nor is there a symlink to the mount point.

As you're mounting under /media/pi, are you relying on teh desktop's automounter to do that? If you are and pir has not logged in to the desktop your remote user will be writing to the root partition/SD card. If a different user logs in the HDD will be mounted to a different place.

There is a further complication in that the /media/pi directory can only be acccessed or traversed by root and pi. If you login via frp as a different user they will not be able to access the HDD.
