Probably zeroconf/mDNS. But not under Bookworm/Network Manager. If you don't have a router, what is setting the IP address of your Raspberry Pi? A router will have a DHCP server that will allocate an IP address to the Raspberry Pi. I believe without a DHCP server your Raspberry will default to a 169... IP address.I don't have a router. I have a Netgear GS308E switch but this doesn't display the ip addresses.
I'd expect an IP address in the 169.254.0.0/16 subnet.
