Depending on the NVME and the NVME (HAT/BASE) you choose you may run into power issues.
Some of HATs/BASEs allow you to supply external power. Some do not. It will work if there is sufficient power and the NVME has the right interface.
You certainly can find NVMEs that fall within the power budget for direct power via the Pi. The Pimoroni BASE does not have external power and they list a bunch on NVME that play well with that configuration, with power supplied via the PCIe ribbon cable.
