You are welcome!nezbrun, thank you very much for your post! It really has thrown some light on this obscure subject.
I hope the RPi guys will see this and include it in the official documentation.
Unfortunately, I wasted a fair bit of time on Youtube when I should've been using the canonical PDFs from Raspberry Pi that I linked. Those PDFs have been far more useful than any Youtube video I've watched, either because they've become stale, or because the presenter has made too many assumptions of either the viewer or their system's setup.
Although I've been using Linux since about 1996, back in the days before VMWare and you had to spend hours rolling your own kernel on bare metal and floppy disks, my Linux usage has been 1% on and 99% off, and I can go months without touching it at this level, with my life living in Windows and bare metal programming. Without currency in such a technical subject, you forget. If you are current, it's easy to make a lot of assumptions of others, and as a result, single sentence answers can often leave more questions than answers.
So most of the post I wrote is in the Raspberry Pi PDFs but presented in a TL;DR format. I solidly recommend that the linked PDFs are used as the primary material, dovetailing that text with my notes to augment where things start going off piste.
There are a few nuggets in my notes that hopefully will relieve others of the purgatory of going down endless rabbit holes like I did.
