Advanced users • What are the issues using the 5V pin versus the micro USB to power a Pi Zero W or Pi Zero 2 W?

Can I power a Pi Zero W or Pi Zero 2 W from the 5 volt pin on the header, or do I have to use the micro USB connector?

I have an auxiliary board connected to a 12 Volt battery. My Pi plugs into this board and is currently powered from a 5V Buck Converter (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4739) through a cable to the micro USB connector. The auxiliary board has a ground plane that is connected to the GND on the Buck Converter and the Pi.

This post https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q ... h-a-5v-pin indicates that there is some sort of protection circuitry and fuse protecting the Pi when using the micro USB connector. However, I don't see anything like that in the Pi Zero W or Pi Zero 2 W schematics. (https://datasheets.raspberrypi.com/rpiz ... My4wLjAuMA..), and (https://datasheets.raspberrypi.com/rpiz ... Ny4wLjAuMA..)

What are other issues pros/cons of just running a wire from the 5 V output of the Buck Converter to the 5 Volt pins on the Pi Zero W or Pi Zero 2 W?
