The video @embeddedbarsha put forward isn't what i'm looking for. I meant that I wan't to install something that would have as little impact on use of my Pi as a desktop system as possible, not replace the whole OS with another.
Thanks for mentioning RetroPie, @Moonmarch. I had thought maybe I should give that a go, but can I install it as an app, or is it another OS replacement?
The whole point is I want a reliable way to test this without risking the normal running of my system. What I had in mind was a single stand-alone game (or other type of app even), that can be used to check gamepad functionality, that I could install the standard way using sudo apt install.
