Yes, Pi1, 2, and 3 had an SMSC9514 4 port USB hub and 10/100 ethernet adapter.Ah. Make sense. So anything compatible with the builtin chips would work if connected externally. Neat. Didn't realize that. Thanks.Prior to Pi 4, those wired Ethernet adaptors are USB-connected.
Pi3B+ used a LAN7515, which was a 4 port USB hub and LAN7800 gigabit ethernet adapter in one package.
In both cases they connected to the single dwc2 USB2 interface of the SoC.
If you bought either of those chips, or other chip with the relevant ethernet IP on-board (eg SMSC9512), then it should in theory work on a Compute Module.
