Hi, I bought a machine I need to control with RS485 to use their software
They want 500+ for a USB to RS485 converter optically isolated convertor
Is RS485 like RS232?
I'm hoping I just need to connect ports to get it to work as I bought a PCI card with RS485 for a fraction of the price
I'm assuming the USB emulates RS485 ports and windows doesn't see the difference
And what does optically isolated mean?
From CNC forums I see it uses 4 wires, the 5v line can blow fuses
I assume this is what they're isolating
I read also that it also needs gnd and transmit/receive connect and you can ditch the 5v which is isolating it if I read right?
Anyone see why it shouldn't work with any RS485 device when setup?
I want to make things for my pi project with the machine so it is sort of pi related
