Haven't tried building wood cases for Pis, but if I did, I'd probably be looking at Maple or Ash for the material. Though if you wanted something really durable, there is always Lignum Vitae.

I'd avoid ash, its one of the woods with a low burn temperature (no idea if that is why it is called ash?).

Ash has an ignition temperature of 850C which puts it among the rest of the hardwoods in terms of not easily catching fire.
