Or just setup sshfs (*) between the two machines, then you don't have to muck with any of this weird stuff.
(*) Or some other, older and harder to setup/use file sharing protocol, such as "NFS". There are many others as well, but sshfs is the best for casual use (and this thread's content fits into that general category).
