I wonder how long ago did you walk into Staples, Bestbuy, Walmart, Canada Computers or other big box store that sells laptops. Or online store like neweggs.ca and search for Linux laptops there. Thank you for referring to System76, they have some really good laptops. However, I was talking about ARM based machines.May I suggest trying "Linux laptop" as a Google search term and doing some reading.
Pinebook. Excellent machine. But I am more convinced that any ARM based chromebook could be better deal. Just make it dual boot with Linux.

I absolutely agree with your second point. Likely cheapest entry point for a new system is repurposing a Chromebook. ChromeOS hardware is almost guaranteed to play well with Linux. Easy to get ChromeOS, Linux and Android supported.
