Thanks for the suggestion. I actually tried the X11 version, but the performance was below what I needed. (I like to watch videos and there was a lot of screen tearing.)

I don't think this is a complete solution, but I did manage to figure out a good setup for the time being. Someone else might find this useful, so I'm going to add it here...

After experimenting with the default desktop again, I realized that it might be Wayland responsible for better performance, as opposed to the tweaks that were added to the Raspberry PI OS. So, I decided to try KDE, which can be run with Wayland. I installed it through tasksel and made sure that the Wayland version was selected during login. I tweaked the settings to reduce all the fancy window effects (which I don't like, I don't need, and which slow down the system). I ended up getting video that played reasonably well and a pretty responsive desktop environment. It's slower than others in a certain respect, but KDE is a bit more resource-heavy. I've had some programs get sluggish now and again and the sensors don't show up for the hardware in the system monitor (other people experienced this on PI hardware, so it seems to be an issue). But, I consider that minor. I have window borders that are generous, window snapping, tiling shortcuts, I can customize what I want, and KDE respects my settings a lot more than the PIXEL desktop. It also pretty obviously seems to benefit from Wayland, which I can't say about the other desktops I've tried. When I tried KDE previously, I didn't use the Wayland backend and the performance wasn't great. The temperature is still about 5-15C above what my PI4B runs at. But, it was running hotter even on less resource-heavy desktop environments. I think the PI5 just runs hotter. I don't like that, but with the PI4B, certain system updates helped. I'm hoping that happens with the PI5 in the future.

It's not a fix, but it's something for now. :)
