Hoping to improve the audio from Bluetooth to optical, I acquired a device that splits HDMI into video and audio, or so it claims.

I powered everything down, hooked everything up, and repowered everything. The beeping from the Bluetooth sound bar informed me that a Bluetooth connection had been made. There was no video and no other sound. I powered down as gracefully as I could blind, checked all the connections, and tried again, to the same result. Yes, I had HDMI cables everyplace they were supposed to be.
Deciding that the splitter contraption was probably faulty or unsupported, I removed it and its cables, dinky power supply, optical line, etc., and restored my Pi 5 to be as it was when working perfectly a half hour earlier. But now there was a problem: it seemed to power up properly, except the fan on the official active heatsink did not come on. And there was no video. I tried different cables, both ports, multiple monitors. I removed the PCIe M.2 drive and inserted a micro-USB backup I had fortunately made before the whole process started. No joy.
Green LED comes on. The fan does not. Nor does HDMI. Official power supply. And it always boots at least enough for the soundbar to do its damned ba-boop.
Any idea how to fix this? I made no Pi configuration changes. I'm hoping there's some piece of grand magic that will return it to normalcy without my being able to see it on screen.
Oh, and even though it is on, the RPi 5 is room temperature, cool to the touch, a phenomenon I have not encountered before.
