It's the same situation here for me.
below you see screenshots from a Pi5 (VNCviewer) trying to access a CM4 DUT (VNCserver) with the CM4 running X11 (openbox). As you can see from the screenshot the desktop is just a grey boxIt doesn't matter if the DUT is Pi4 or Pi5 -> as soon as the window manager get's switched to open box on these devices VNC fails, showing grey screen only.
a Pi3B running bookworm is working just fine (running openbox by default).
